Plant Succession is change in plant community over time.  The time can range from weeks to years.  Climate can influence the plant community.  Not all plants can survive the same temperatures.  Jane is working on how to make a weed free area.  She is trying to find out how to leach the soil so the weeds can't survive and the favorable plants can move in.
Example: If there is a plant that needs 10,000 calories a day and, it finds an area with that amount of calories it would move in because it is fit to survive there.  That plant would take calories until it dropped below 10,000.  It would then die off and a new plant that only needs, say, 8,000 moves in it's place and that continues down the line until there are no more calories.
The Key to weed control is "not to kill the weed but, to fill the niches." Put something in it's place.
