Montana State University Noxious Weed Researchers
Students from Whitehall High School Computer, Biology, Horticulture, and Photography classes spent a day listening to presentations and interviewing the MSU researchers listed below. Each of these researchers will be featured on a web page along with a bounty of "how to" Weed fighting information provided by them and many links to related sites. The Computer, Horticulture, Photography, Advanced Placement Biology, and 10th grade Biology classes went on a field trip to Montana State University, Bozeman on Tue. Oct. 3. We left at 8:25 AM and arrived back to school at about 3:15 PM. We broke into small groups each with a chaperone, a photo student and an Advanced Placement Biology student and, went to a series of different presentations given by researchers dealing with noxious weed control.
Our goal is to expose our students to University level scientific research methods and to come away with pictures, notes and "how to" text that we are using to feature these researchers on the Montana War On Weeds (mtwow.org) web site.
Each group of biology students [see above] are producing web pages featuring the professors and their: 1) research, 2) weed fighting methods, 3) photos taken by the students for these web pages, and 4) many other links. Also, the computer class went to the Burns Technology Center for the day and learned some new web site production techniques for our site, such as Quick Time VR and the horticulture class visited the Plant Growth Center and the MSU Horticulture program.
The students and chaperones were provided a school made sack lunch paid for by the Jefferson County Weed District Greenhouse Insectary Grant from the Noxious Weed Trust Fund. This grant also paid for transportation, the computer instruction and the teacher substitute.
